Mulled spice drink

  • 750ml bottle of red wine or 750 ml of cider or carton apple juice
  • 1 orange cut into thin slices
  • 1 apple cut into thin slices
  • 1 cinnamon stick *
  • 1 star anise*
  • 4 cloves*
  • 3 black peppercorns*
  • 50ml brandy/sloe gin (optional)
  1. Pour the red wine, cider or apple juice into a large pan. Add the orange, cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves and peppercorns. Heat very gently until simmering, then turn off the heat.
  2. Scoop out the whole spices and peppercorns with a spoon. Keep the apple and orange slices to add as decoration to each glass.
  3. If you want a drink with more of a kick, stir in the brandy or sloe gin. 
  4. Ladle into mugs or heatproof glasses to serve. Add a slice of orange or apple to each drink as decoration.
